Be Connected

In July 2O19, North East Neighbourhood House Network received a Capacity Building Grant from Good Things Foundation to grow the Be Connected program in the North East, by recruiting and up-skilling 100 Digital Mentors by June 2020.

What is 'Be Connected?'

Be Connected is an Australian government initiative committed to increasing the confidence, skills and online safety of older Australians. Be Connected aims to empower everyone to use the internet and everyday technology to thrive in our digital world. Through the Be Connected online resources, Australians can learn the basics of using digital devices and engaging with the internet, including:

  • Being safer while online
  • Talking to or seeing family and friends who live far away
  • Finding new friends who share interests and hobbies
  • Connecting with old friends
  • Keeping up to date with what’s happening in communities and around the world
  • Shopping and selling online, safely and securely.

Good Things Foundation manages the national Be Connected Network of 2,500 community organisations who support older Australians to thrive in a digital world.

What is a Digitial Mentor?

There are still many people who need help to use the internet and learn essential digital skills. Digital Mentors support people to build their confidence and skills to use digital technology.

Being a Digital Mentor is about inspiring people to try using digital technology, and supporting them through their first steps using computers, mobile devices and the internet.

Digital Mentors receive comprehensive training that equips them to help people to get online, build their digital skills, overcome any fears or barriers to getting online, and learn where to find more help.

Digital Mentoring Training

NENHN have employed a Lead Digital Mentor who will recruit and up-skill 100 Digital Mentors in the North East by June 2020.

The Lead Digital Mentor will work closely with Neighbourhood Houses across the network to identify opportunities to establish Be Connected programs and events, and recruit volunteers who will become Digital Mentors at the conclusion of their training.

Once Digital Mentors have received their training, they will be supported by the Lead Digital Mentor to put their skills into practice, inspiring and empowering older Australians to get online.
